Who we are

We believe theatre is not reserved for the few. It is a shared room where anyone can step into the light, try on a hat, and become someone else for a while.

Avaruuden avoin teatteriyhdistys ry is a nonprofit association based in Oulu. We bring people together through community theatre, creative workshops and cultural activities — with a particular commitment to participants who are often left outside of cultural life: older people, people with disabilities and anyone who has never set foot on a stage.

The word avaruus means space — the open expanse above us. Our name expresses the kind of theatre we want to make: open, boundless and welcoming, a stage with room for everyone. More about us →

Our mission

“Our mission is to encourage artistic expression, promote theatrical creativity, and strengthen cultural participation through accessible and inclusive performing arts activities.”

Avaruuden avoin teatteriyhdistys ry believes that theatre is a powerful way to bring people together, share experiences, explore ideas, and build meaningful connections.

Through creative collaboration, theatrical exploration, cultural activities, and opportunities for artistic participation, we aim to contribute to a more inclusive and culturally vibrant society.

We believe that everyone should have opportunities to experience, explore, and participate in the performing arts.

Our vision

Our vision is a vibrant cultural environment where creativity is encouraged, theatre is accessible, and people from different backgrounds can participate in meaningful artistic experiences.

We envision a community where performing arts provide opportunities for learning, expression, dialogue, cooperation, and cultural understanding.

We aim to contribute to a future in which theatre remains an important part of community life and artistic participation is open to everyone.

Age is never a limit.

Artistic philosophy

Play first. Perfection never.

We value presence over polish. A rehearsal is successful when someone laughs, someone surprises themselves, and everyone leaves a little braver than they came. Our work grows from improvisation, shared stories and the particular talents of whoever is in the room.

Accessibility and inclusion are not add-ons: we adapt scripts, spaces and roles so that people with different abilities and circumstances can take part fully — including those using wheelchairs or walkers.

  1. 01Theatre and Performing ArtsTeatteri ja esittävät taiteetAt the heart of the association is the shared work of making theatre: reading scripts together, devising scenes, rehearsing and, when a piece is ready, sharing it with an audience. We welcome both first-timers and people with long stage experience, and we adapt roles so that every participant can take part on their own terms.
  2. 02Community TheatreYhteisöteatteriCommunity theatre means theatre made by and with local people. Our productions draw on the stories, humour and everyday life of Oulu and its residents, and they are performed in places where people already gather — community halls, youth centres, summer stages and neighbourhood events.
  3. 03Creative WorkshopsLuovat työpajatLow-threshold workshops introduce improvisation, voice, movement, character work and storytelling. Workshops are designed so that no previous experience is needed, and the pace is set by the group rather than by a performance deadline.
  4. 04Artistic EducationTaidekasvatusWe aim to support learning in the performing arts at every stage of life: basic acting technique, stagecraft, script reading, directing exercises and the practical skills behind a production, from props to lighting.
  5. 05Cultural ParticipationKulttuuriin osallistuminenTaking part in culture is a right, not a privilege. We seek to lower the practical, financial and social barriers that keep people away from the arts, and to create spaces where people feel invited rather than merely tolerated.
  6. 06Creative CollaborationLuova yhteistyöTheatre is a collective art. We hope to work alongside other associations, cultural actors, schools, care organisations and local communities to create projects that none of us could make alone.
  7. 07Inclusive ArtsInklusiivinen taideAccessibility is built into how we work: accessible rehearsal spaces wherever possible, scripts in clear language, roles adapted for wheelchair users and people with different abilities, and an atmosphere in which age is never a limit.
  8. 08Storytelling and ExpressionTarinankerronta ja ilmaisuEvery person carries stories worth telling. Through storytelling circles, monologue work and devised scenes, participants explore their own experiences and imagination, and discover new ways to express themselves.

Volunteer · Community collaboration

Every production needs more hands than faces.

Props, costumes, events, hosting, communications — or simply joining the ensemble. Partners and supporters are equally welcome.
